Comprehensive Skin Checks in Burleigh

Don’t leave your skin health to chance—take the steps to look after it with a comprehensive skin check at our clinic in Burleigh. At James St Burleigh Medical Centre, our doctors offer thorough detection to ensure your peace of mind. Early detection leads to better treatment outcomes, which is why we provide regular skin cancer check appointments.

What Happens During a Skin Check

Our Doctors will ask you about your medical history, including any medications you are currently taking or have taken in the past. They will ask about your family members and whether they’ve been diagnosed with skin cancer. This information is important for our practitioners to note, as some factors contribute to your skin cancer risk. After that, you’ll have an opportunity to discuss any concerns or lesions you are particularly worried about.

You’ll be able to ask any questions during your skin check, and if you’d like a chaperone, we can absolutely have one accompany us. Alternatively, you are welcome to bring a support person along. We want to make sure you feel as comfortable as possible. If the Doctor finds anything concerning, they will discuss your options with you. Our detection methods include the following:

Visual Screening

A visual skin screening looks for unusual marks, moles, or changes. They'll check if there are any new spots or if existing ones have changed in size, shape, or colour. This is often the first step in identifying potential issues.

Dermoscopy

A visual skin screening looks for unusual marks, moles, or changes. They'll check if there are any new spots or if existing ones have changed in size, shape, or colour. This is often the first step in identifying potential issues.

Biopsy

They may suggest a biopsy if they find something that needs further investigation. This involves taking a small sample of skin tissue to send for lab analysis. The lab technician will be able to confirm if the lesion is cancerous or not and if surgical removal is needed.

Why Annual Skin Cancer Checks Are Essential

Living in Australia means you're exposed to some of the harshest sun conditions in the world, which increases your risk of developing skin cancer. This makes regular screening an essential part of your healthcare routine. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer globally, but with regular skin checks and detection, you have a significantly better chance of a successful treatment.

I’ve followed Dr Peter Koster around three surgeries on the coast as he is the BEST!
Dr Koster is very thorough, knowledgeable and personable. Alongside this, the reception staff are very helpful and friendly. Of note, in my most recent encounter with the reception staff, Julie was amazing! She put my mind at ease when I was feeling worried and nervous about test results. Julie was very quick to follow up on the pending results and kept me well informed along the way. I was most impressed with her understanding and compassion. Thanks so much Julie, I am ever so grateful!
